What is a tooth extraction?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jaw. It’s sometimes necessary when a tooth has broken down beyond repair, is severely decayed or infected, or is causing crowding or discomfort. While our priority is always to save natural teeth wherever possible, there are occasions when extraction is the only way to remove infection and protect your overall oral health.
Who might need a dental extraction?
An extraction may be recommended if a tooth is too damaged to restore with a filling, crown, or root canal treatment. You and your dentist will discuss all the available options first and agree together if removal is the best course of action. Extractions can also be necessary to remove wisdom teeth that are impacted or painful.
How does a tooth extraction work?
Before removing a tooth, we’ll ensure you’re completely comfortable by using a local anaesthetic to numb the area. Once the tooth and surrounding tissues are fully anaesthetised, your dentist will gently loosen and lift the tooth from its socket. After the tooth is removed, we’ll make sure a healthy clot forms to aid healing, and you’ll be given clear aftercare instructions to follow at home. We also check in with you afterwards to make sure you’re recovering well.
How long does a dental extraction take?
The time needed for an extraction depends on the position and condition of the tooth. Simple extractions can take just a few minutes, while more complex or surgical extractions may take longer. We’ll always explain what to expect beforehand so there are no surprises.
How much does a tooth extraction cost?
The cost of an extraction varies depending on the complexity of the procedure. Prices start from £230 for private patients and £175 for Dental Subscription members. You’ll receive a detailed treatment plan and quote before we begin, ensuring full transparency and peace of mind.
